About Realms

Realms servers are a service hosted by Mojang using Amazon servers. I have been testing out a Realm for a while now together with Max to see how they work and if having Realms is a viable option for us. In short the pro's and con's are as follows:

Pro's:

No back end work with backups, restarts and so forth. The host takes care of that for me. I can leave the server running and no one has to step in to keep it going for me so it will always be accessible to the players.

They seem to be very stable and run quite smoothly.

It's easy to switch to a minigame from an increasing list of minigames supplied by the wider Minecraft community and hosted on the Realms servers. So having events can be a spur of the moment decision as long as either Miss, Max or I am around to do the switch.

It's quite a bit cheaper than what I'm paying now.

Con's:

As of yet you can't use snapshots.

There can only be 20 players invited to a Realm and only 10 can play at a time.

The view distance is set to 9 which impacts mob spawning negatively and thus makes mob farming slower than usual.

There are possibly some commands that don't work, but I have yet to find out which in that case. The official information only says that "most" commands work.

Is the realm with the the map we are currently playing on getting a rollback to 1.8?

I was hoping that 1.8.1 would be out in time but something seems to be causing a delay. If worst comes to worst I'll have to keep Raise Atlantis on hold until then. I don't think just uploading the 1.8.1 pre world would work unfortunately so it was kinda a mistake to update. I don't know how much players have actually been playing since the snapshots of 1.8.1 so maybe a rollback would be possible. I'll have a look at that. But yeah - I'm still hoping they will be done on wednesday...

I'm actually wondering if no one else than you wants to continue playing or if my information is somewhat lacking since no one else is commenting at all. The staff and I have talked privately so they are all fine with the development, but what the players think about it all I have no idea. Hopefully a few more will want to join you, Miss and Phelps, sven.

Thank you so much for building our lovely snapshot server and running it all this time for us to play in. I know I've been increasingly hard to find lately as my moderator duties elsewhere have increased yet again, but that only makes me value what you and the whole mod team do for us even more.

I will totally come to Realms and play - but if you find you need my slot for someone more active I will understand.

Oh, and anyone can find me with a pm here, as long as the forum stays up, or as woolwind on minecraftforums.
